A Gay Tour of Provence: Rosé, a Château and the French Riviera

Picture a village square somewhere in Provence in the late afternoon. The plane trees are throwing dappled shade over the café tables, the ochre walls are glowing as if they've been lit by a very expensive lighting designer, and the only real decision left in your day is whether to linger over the cheese or open another bottle of your favourite rosé. That, my friends, is the mood of a gay tour of Provence done properly, and it's exactly the feeling Wayne and I built Rosé Royale around.

I started Hermes Holidays in Sydney in 2016 because I wanted to break the mould of what people think when they hear "group travel". Our ethos was simple: to curate luxury travel experiences the way Wayne and I actually like to travel. After 28 years circling Europe as a guide on tours, I knew what worked and, just as importantly, what didn't. Our recipe is simple: gorgeous accommodation, late starts, long lunches, incredible inclusions and brilliant company, creating an environment where absolutely nobody raises an eyebrow at who you are or who you love. And Wayne and I host every trip ourselves, to make sure everything runs to the standard we expect.

Why Provence Was Made for a Gay Holiday

Provence has been seducing visitors for centuries, and frankly, it knows it. Vineyards roll out in every direction, and markets spill over with olives, cheeses and linen you absolutely do not need but will buy anyway.

What makes a gay holiday in Provence with us a little different is the company. We absolutely adore our Hermes family, and we're honoured that 80% of our guests come back and travel with us time and time again. We also love welcoming new members into our ever growing family. You'll find our groups are small, so it feels less like a tour and more like a house party with excellent catering and good music. Gay men, lesbians, bisexual, trans and nonbinary travellers, and our wonderful straight allies all fit right in. Plenty of people join us solo, too, so we keep a few rooms aside for single travellers.

Château Life, Darling

If you have ever fantasised about having your own château, Rosé Royale is your audition. We spend four nights at Château de Tourreau, a 20 acre estate of woodland, manicured French gardens and orchards, with grand reception rooms, a billiard room and a library inside, and an enormous pool that becomes the social headquarters of the entire trip.

The château is drop dead gorgeous. No, really, it is STUNNING! I never thought I would stay somewhere so beautiful. You truly feel like you're living your Disney Princess life, and you're just not going to want to leave.

Breakfast is served in the courtyard, with the gardens just waking up around you. Try archery, pétanque or tennis, or commit fully to the ancient sport of lying very still on a sun lounge. All are valid. We also give you a whole day at the château to live like Kings and Queens (let's be honest, mainly Queens).

Then there are the parties. Our Blanc Ball welcome gala is dinner under the stars in the château grounds, with our private chef, wines from the neighbouring vineyards and a strict all white dress code. Later in the week you are encouraged to don your favourite fabulous kaftan as we throw an afternoon tea dance around the pool. Dine, dance and dip, repeat as required.

Long Lunches in Wine Country

You cannot write about a luxury gay tour of Provence without a love letter to its table. This is a region that takes lunch seriously, and so do we. Think sun ripened produce, local cheeses and olive oil, and dishes that taste of exactly where you are sitting. Provence is also rosé country, which is where our tour gets its name, so it would be rude not to sample the local drop.

Our highlights include a delicious degustation lunch at La Table Alain Jaume in Châteauneuf du Pape, where we indulge in their renowned reds, and a visit to Domaine de Tara, known in particular for its rosés, set among the vineyards. It's the perfect backdrop for a fabulous afternoon. On the way to the coast we wind through France's main rosé producing country to Château de la Gaude for a tasting and a four course lunch. The art collection in the gardens must be seen to be believed. Every meal comes with a view, and did we mention how good the company is!

Villages Worth Every Step

Provence rewards the curious, and you will earn every long lunch. Those hilltop villages are steep, and your calves will know all about it, but by the end of the week they'll be popping and you'll look sensational in your shorts.

Avignon, the city of the Popes, is where we first touch down in Provence, with the vast Palais des Papes and lunch in Place de l'Horloge. Orange gives you its ancient Roman Theatre. The famous morning market at L'Isle sur la Sorgue is a paradise of produce, antiques and crafts, and Roussillon, with its ochre cliffs and red hued houses, looks like it was painted by a very dramatic artist who refused to tone it down.

And then there is St Paul de Vence. I absolutely fell in love with it on my very first visit, and I make sure I drop in whenever I am in the south of France. The galleries are sublime. I could happily lose myself in them for hours.

As for lavender, it usually peaks in early summer and has often been harvested by the time we arrive, but its scent still lingers in the laneways of the villages.

Hello, French Riviera

After four fabulous days, we bid a tearful adieu to our château and swap the vineyards for the sea. It's Riviera time, baby! Our destination is Nice, the Queen of the Riviera. Our home for the next three fun filled nights is the glamorous five star Boscolo Nice Hotel and Spa, all crisp white interiors and bold contemporary art, with a rooftop pool, bar and restaurant looking out over the city and the Mediterranean.

Then there is Castel Plage, a slice of gay person's Nirvana and a favourite beach for our whole community. Our sun lounges are reserved, lunch arrives straight to your chair, and a chilled bottle of rosé is waiting for each of you. The "views" are spectacular, if you know what I mean. God bless the speedo! Come nightfall, Nice has so many fun bars and clubs to keep you out well past any reasonable bedtime.

Starting Your Gay Tour of Provence in Paris

Rosé Royale departs from Paris, but Paris itself is not part of the tour. If you want to do the City of Light properly first, our separate Gay Paris Extension runs right before it, with a stay in the Marais, a sightseeing morning with me, lunch on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower and a night at the Moulin Rouge, before we all board the TGV south together. It's entirely optional and gloriously over the top, so why would you want to miss it?

Ready for Your Château Moment?

If a gay tour of Provence with château days, long lunches, hilltop villages and sunsets on the French Riviera sounds like your kind of holiday, I would love to show you more. Have a look at the full itinerary, accommodation and inclusions on our Rosé Royale tour page, and download the brochure while you are there. Wayne and I would love to welcome you.
